Our Story
Formally installed on November 25, 2002, the Brooklyn 9/11 Living Memorial Grove is a serene and peaceful space, dedicated to honoring the memory of lives tragically lost and those rescued by first responders on
September 11, 2001. It stands as a place of solace and remembrance for all visitors, providing a tranquil environment for reflection, healing and emotional development.
The background
Community resident Silvia Agosto, engaged the office of Congresswoman Nydia M. Velazquez, to have NYC Parks Department reinstall markers and banners in time for the commemoration of the 20th Anniversary. Until then, the grove had been a community gem, hidden in plain site. Long time resident Melissa del Valle Ortiz and then Community Liaison to the Congressmember has since spearheaded the formation of an official committee as intended by the United States Department of Agriculture and Forestry.
Made up of community residents and organizations with direct ties to first responders, the committee will work to utilize the Grove as a place for memorialization and remembrance as well as inspire renewed strength, healing and reflection. Together, we hope to expand the footprint to honor those who gave their all and grow to include those impacted by long term and life threatening illnesses following the September 11th attack.
